Michele Antonio Grandi

Carrara, 1635-1707

Marble, cm. 104 x 29 x 10

The presence of marble instruments is not unusual in the collections once possessed by the Este family: the items listed in the inventory documentations of the house of Este are diverse and precious, they are instruments so beautiful and fragile that they seem to have been commissioned more as means of enrich the personal collection of the Prince than to be used as actual instruments. The guitar, produced around the year 1680, was presumably gifted on that same year to duke Francesco II d’Este on behalf of Prince Cybo of Massa. The instrument, originally equipped with strings, presents embellishments in black marble paste which aim to reproduce natural and geometric patterns, these adorn both the anterior harmonic board and the keyboard.
